Scoliosis is a sideways curvature of the spine. It is a very complex condition yet the causes is mostly unknown and difficult to pin down. Some of the factors that might contribute to the development of scoliosis are upper cervical injury from a traumatic birth, spinal cord tension, and muscle imbalances.
Based on alternative perspective, scoliosis is also tied in to emotional causes such as a loss of a parent or a close loved one through death or divorce, a dramatic changes in the home environment, having to cope with dominating caregivers, not being able to express one’s choices, and having to suppress one’s feelings.
There is also data to show that while scoliosis may affect 2-3% of the population, females are eight times more likely to progress to a curve that requires treatment. Most of the scoliosis begins at the onset of puberty. What is going on in a child’s life at the time? This is the time when a child’s body is changing into an adult body but the child might not want to leave childhood emotionally. Nature is attempting to push the body up while the child is trying to hold it back in.
Yoga is an exercise that connects both the physical and the emotional aspect of the body. Even though there is no specific protocol that is aimed for scoliosis correction, the yoga practice to make the spine more healthy and flexible, while meditation and emotional release work could support healing.
